BIO
Erika Kangas (b. 1970, Stockholm) is a Swedish artist whose work explores the unseen and subconscious through abstract forms. Her practice focuses on translating invisible structures and phenomena into organic visual compositions.
Educated in art and pedagogy at the Waldorf teacher training program in the 1990s, Kangas has been influenced by Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy and the spiritual abstraction of Hilma af Klint. These influences inform her exploration of hidden dimensions and symbolic structures.
Kangas works primarily with drip watercolor techniques, allowing spontaneous forms to emerge. She often incorporates materials such as salt, salt crystals and plastic film to create unpredictable textures and patterns that reflect the interaction between control and chance.
Her work has been exhibited in Sweden and Finland, including the exhibition Oblivion in collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn. One of her more recent exhibitions was held in her former home on Djurgården in Stockholm, where she also had her first studio.
